My name is Gary Bowers and I am a contributing writer for Detox Local. I love my job because it combines my passion for writing with my passion for recovery. I have been affected by the destructive powers of drug addiction for my entire life. As a drug user, as a friend, as a family member, as a son, and as a father. After a lifetime of battling addiction, I am happy and proud to be clean and sober today. My purpose in life is to help others recover, and I’m honored to have an opportunity to use my writing skills as a way to serve, educate, inform, and inspire.
In addition to my work in the recovery community, I have extensive experience advocating for, supporting, and educating adults and children on mental health issues. I have worked on behalf of NAMI – National Alliance on Mental Illness in the juvenile mental health court in Salt Lake City, Utah, and as a Behavioral Health Associate for Granite School District (Salt Lake City, Utah). I believe my experience with addiction and mental health issues gives me a unique perspective, and I come to work each day in hopes that I can make a positive impact on someone’s life. Recovery is always possible!
