Drug & Alcohol Detoxification Facilities in Hawaii

Hawaii may not have the highest number of detox programs out of the states but it does have some very high-quality medical detox facilities. The island of O'ahu has 10 out of the 18 detox centers in the state of Hawaii. In comparison, the island of Kauai has one detox center and the islands of Maui and Hawaii have 3 and 4 detoxes, respectively.

If you are looking for drug or alcohol treatment then Hawaii has many helpful options. There are all different types of treatment centers across the state of Hawaii. The state has 19 residential treatment centers. There are also 141 outpatient drug rehab centers in the state. This is quite a large number of rehab facilities given the state's population of just over 1.4 million. These rehab programs are spread across multiple islands although the highest concentration is on O'ahu with just over four dozen rehab programs on the island. These include providers that offer inpatient treatment, residential treatment, and outpatient services.

Dual diagnosis mental health issues are also quite common among people struggling with substance use disorders. According to Mental Health America, Hawaii ranked in 6th place for states with the highest prevalence of mental health issues in 2020. Thankfully, there are 40 SAMHSA-approved dual diagnosis providers in the state. If you or a loved one is struggling with drug addiction and mental health issues, there are many mental health services in Hawaii that provide a wide range of treatment options.

Drug Abuse in Hawaii

The state of Hawaii is somewhat of an outlier compared to the rest of America. It is the only state without any reported fentanyl-laced prescription drugs. It also has some of the lowest rates of opioid prescription in the nation. While the country has an average of 43.3 opioid prescriptions per 100 people, Hawaii currently has 33.4 per 100 people.

While opioids are less prevalent in Hawaii, crystal meth is a major problem in the state. In 2012, 48% of people entering addiction treatment in Hawaii were entering treatment for crystal meth. This has been an ongoing issue for several decades now. In 2002 the Department of Justice was already aware that methamphetamine was an issue in Hawaii. The problem has only escalated over the past 20 years and continues to worsen.

Hawaii is a major hub for drug activity that often acts as a waypoint between Asia, Australia, and the Americas. Because of this, there is a high volume of heroin, cocaine, and crystal meth present in Hawaii. The main drug trafficking organizations in Hawaii are currently unknown. At the local level, the distribution is performed by gangs that include White, Black, Hispanic, and Native Hawaiian members.

While there is a large drug presence on the islands, there is also a thriving recovery community as well. If someone is struggling with drug or alcohol addiction in Hawaii, there are many options to enter recovery. This often begins with a drug or alcohol detox center, and these centers can provide referrals to further treatment once detox has been safely completed. Finding aftercare can be a crucial step in the recovery process. There are dozens of treatment providers in Hawaii that can help you continue and strengthen your recovery.
